BIS2020: ARK’s Q&A Video Conference on COVID-19 and Market Volatility
During this period of uncertainty related to COVID-19 and market volatility, we believe trusted communication is more important than ever. For that reason, on April 2nd ARK hosted BIS2020, a live Q&A video conference that brought together a group of experts from our research ecosystem to help answer questions on the coronavirus, government policy, market volatility, and the role innovation plays during tumultuous times. Originally scheduled to be an in-person event held at Columbia University, we decided to move the event online after the coronavirus (COVID-19) hit. With over 4,000 viewers for the live video conference, we hope BIS2020 provides our audience with an open, transparent and collaborative exchange of insights from our trusted sources. BIS2020 Speaker Bios
Dr. Isaiah Arkin – Professor of Structural Biochemistry at Hebrew University
Professor Arkin is the Arthur Lejwa Professor of Structural Biochemistry at Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the former Vice-President for Research and Development at the University. He holds a Ph.D. from the Yale School of Medicine in Cell Biology. Professor Arkin’s research sheds new light on the inner workings of flu viruses and, in particular, how a virus avoids anti-viral therapy.
Dr. Art Laffer – Economist, TIME Greatest Minds of the 20th Century
Art is the Founder and Chairman of Laffer Associates, an institutional economic research and consulting firm, as well as Laffer Investments. He has been a consultant to various U.S. presidents and government departments. From 1972-1980, Art was the first to hold the title of Chief Economist and advised Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on fiscal policy in the U.K. In June 2019, Art received the Presidential Medal of Freedom — the nation’s highest civilian honor.
Cathie Wood – Founder, CEO, and CIO of ARK Invest
Cathie is the Founder, CEO and CIO of ARK Invest. She has over 40 years of experience investing in innovation and founded ARK in 2014 to focus solely on innovation, specifically identifying large-scale investment opportunities in the public markets resulting from technological innovations centered around genome sequencing, robotics, artificial intelligence, energy storage, and blockchain technology.
Brett Winton – Director of Research at ARK Invest
Brett has worked alongside Cathie for over 12 years since their time at AllianceBernstein. As Director of Research for ARK Invest, Brett directs the proprietary research of ARK’s investment team. The team recognizes that disruptive innovation demands a dynamic and universal approach. By researching across sectors, industries and markets, ARK seeks to gain a deeper understanding of the convergence and market potential of disruptive innovations, and thus size investment opportunities more appropriately.

Tom Staudt – Chief Operating Officer at ARK Invest
Tom Staudt joined ARK in June 2014. As ARK’s Chief Operating Officer, Tom manages and oversees the daily operations of the firm, screens financial markets for new opportunities, and evaluates and implements ARK’s product portfolio. Prior to joining ARK, Tom worked in a sales and consulting role for WILX. Prior to WILX, Tom interned at Fidelity Investments in its mutual fund department, and consulted on millennial investing behavior at TIAA-CREF. Tom received his Bachelor of Business Administration, magna cum laude, in Finance and Economics from the University of Notre Dame, a Master of Arts in Telecommunications Policy from Michigan State University, a Master of Science in New Media Management from the Newhouse School at Syracuse University, and his Master of Business Administration from Cornell University.
